Using Superset in HDC

Apache Superset is an open-source software cloud-native application designed for the exploration and visualization of big data. To learn more about the application, visit the Superset documentation.

How it works

The Superset integration uses a single sign-on protocol and is configured upon request on a per-project basis by a Platform Administrator so that each project has its own deployment of Superset and an assigned Superset Administrator. Once deployed, Project members can request access to Superset of their Project (see Getting Access to Superset - Launching for the first time). After access was granted and configured by the Project and Platform Administrators, the Project member can explore the data, create rich interactive visualizations, and use the SQL Lab to query data and prepare it for visualization.

Prerequisites

  • Project Collaborator role or higher
  • Superset has been configured for the Project by the Platform Administrator. See Getting Access to Superset.

Data Stewardship

Users are reminded to abide by the Platform Terms of Use and any Project-specific restrictions when using Workspace tools to access data and code.

Getting Access to Superset

Project Administrators may contact the Platform Administrator to set up Superset for their project. Additional information can be found at Welcome to Superset.

Launching Superset

Launching for the first time

After the Platform Administrator has deployed Superset as a workbench tool for your Project, you as a Project member can request permission to access that Project's instance of Superset.

  1. Launch your Project and click the Superset icon in the left menu bar.
  2. A pop-up window prompts you to send a request to the Platform Administrator to configure your access to Superset. After clicking Send Request, the Platform Administrator is notified both by email and in the portal notification system.
  3. The Platform Administrator sets up the user's access to Superset access and works with the Project Administrator to set up the Project PostgreSQL database. After completing the request, the user is notified by email that setup is complete.

Launching after Setup

After the previous setup step has been completed, you can start using Superset to explore and visualize your data by clicking the Superset icon in the left menu bar.
